Dating Fashion: What to Wear on a First Date

Does the outcome of your date depend on your outfit?

Choosing an outfit for a date is a daunting task for any man. So I asked the experts at The Idle Man to give a few tips on putting together an awesome first date look. So let’s hear what they got to say on dating fashion!

Dating Fashion: Comfortable or fashionable?

The hardest part for most men is finding the common ground between what you’re comfy in, while also wanting to maintain looking sharp and turned out for your date. It’s important to remember that this is a social occasion, not a job interview, so relax and put away the suit.

Once you’ve taken into consideration where you are going (if this is the first date we wouldn’t recommend taking her to The Ritz!) we always advise going for a smart casual outfit. This will give you an array of choice from your wardrobe and provide a relaxed atmosphere to your date.

Short sleeve denim shirts are a great item to have in your wardrobe, mostly because they are suited for dressing both up and down. You can match this shirt up with a smart jacket as this will add to the sharp tone you are looking to sustain in your outfit.

Trouser talk

In terms of your bottom half, try some dark trousers for a more sophisticated look. The great thing about dark trousers is that they go with a variety of different pieces and therefore present a good starting point for future dates. It’s best to avoid trainers on the first date, try a more casual alternative such as these plimsolls.

The most important thing of all when dating is just to be yourself, clothes are there to give you the confidence to let your personality come through. If you are really struggling, be sure to check out The Idle Man‘s personal stylist for inspiration. Have fun!
